I don’t have to look far for evidence this works. Two of my students, Fredrik and Tim, have both just picked up Merits in their guitar grade exams, and they’re rightly chuffed with themselves.
Both put in consistent practice over several months rather than cramming in the final weeks. We worked through their pieces closely, identified the specific technical habits that were holding each of them back, and ran through full performances repeatedly so exam day itself didn’t feel like the first time they’d played the piece start to finish. With the RSL grade syllabus the pair jumped in with both feet saw it through. The result speaks for itself — two Merits, and two students who found their own version of the Match Win.
